-
Project status: Mold development and sampling completed, followed by two successful bulk deliveries, according to the project records

The project began with a distinctive concept: two separate perfume bottles that connect through a concealed magnetic structure to form a complete heart shape. One bottle represented “night” through a matte black finish, while the other represented “day” through transparent glass and embossed detailing.
Each bottle could be used independently, while the two bottles together formed a coordinated gift set.
The challenge was not simply to manufacture two unusual glass bottles. It was to turn a visually striking concept into a repeatable packaging system that could be assembled accurately and produced at commercial scale.
The Challenge: Turning a Creative Concept into a Manufacturable Product
The original concept, provided by designer Ahmed Jalal, presented three major engineering challenges.
1. Precise Magnetic Alignment
The two bottles needed to connect accurately so their combined outlines formed a continuous heart shape.
Misalignment between the magnetic components could create a visible break in the heart-shaped silhouette. Uneven magnetic attraction could also affect the joining experience and make the assembly feel inconsistent.
The magnetic structure therefore needed to balance concealed component placement, repeatable alignment, and a visually clean connection.
2. Complex Heart-Shaped Glass Molding
The heart-shaped profile included complex curved transitions, particularly around the inward-facing central area.
These features required careful consideration during glass mold development. Uneven glass distribution and residual stress can present challenges when forming intricate glass geometries, making mold design and annealing control important parts of the development process.
The objective was to achieve the intended shape while improving manufacturing consistency.
3. Two Distinct Finishes Within One Coordinated Design
The two bottles required contrasting appearances:
-
Matte black bottle: External coating with a matte finish.
-
Transparent bottle: Embossed glass detailing with localized gradient decoration.
Both bottles needed to retain their individual visual identities while aligning closely when joined. The decoration process and dimensional fit therefore had to be considered together rather than treated as separate stages.
Our Solution: Engineering the Design for Production
1. Developing a Concealed Magnetic Assembly
The project incorporated concealed magnet cavities into the bottle structure to maintain the clean exterior appearance.
During mold development, precision-machined cavity positions were designed to support symmetrical placement of the magnetic components.
According to the supplied project data, the team evaluated N35 and N42 magnet options during sampling. The final design used N42 neodymium magnets, with additional locating features incorporated into the cavities to help improve positioning consistency.
The reported assembly tests showed that the bottles could attract and align automatically when brought within approximately 1.5 cm of each other. The resulting joint gap was controlled to within 0.3 mm under the reported test conditions.
These details were important because the connection had to work both mechanically and visually: the magnets needed to bring the bottles together, while the finished outline needed to read as one continuous heart.
2. Optimizing the Glass Molding and Annealing Process
The inward-facing curves of the heart-shaped design required particular attention during glass forming.
The development process included adjustments to the glass material formulation and mold venting arrangement to support more uniform glass flow. The annealing process was also refined using a staged cooling profile, with the reported stress-relief time extended by 40%.
During the initial sampling stage, 500 pieces were produced, with a reported forming yield of 92%.
These results provided an initial basis for evaluating the feasibility of the design before proceeding to larger production quantities.
Actual forming performance depends on the glass composition, product geometry, mold design, forming conditions, and annealing process. Each new design therefore requires its own technical evaluation.
3. Coordinating Surface Decoration and Final Assembly
The two bottles required different decoration processes while maintaining consistent assembly dimensions.
The black bottle used external coating and matte curing to achieve its intended finish. The transparent bottle used embossed glass detailing together with localized gradient decoration.
The assembly stage was equally important. Even when the individual bottles looked correct, variations in component positioning or finished dimensions could affect how the two bottles joined.
According to the project records, laser-assisted alignment inspection was used before shipment to check the assembled heart-shaped outline.
This integrated approach helped connect glass manufacturing, decoration, magnetic component placement, and final inspection into one coordinated production process.

-
Magnetic alignment: Automatic attraction and alignment at approximately 1.5 cm.
-
Joint gap: Within 0.3 mm under the reported test conditions.
-
Initial glass sampling: 500 pieces, with a reported forming yield of 92%.
-
First bulk order: 10,000 sets.

The figures above relate to this specific project and should be understood in the context of its defined specifications, inspection criteria, and production conditions.
What This Project Demonstrates
A distinctive packaging concept becomes commercially viable only when design intent can be translated into repeatable manufacturing requirements.
For a magnetic two-bottle design, the critical factors extend beyond the appearance of each individual bottle. They include:
-
Magnetic component placement and alignment
-
Glass geometry and mold design
-
Material behavior during forming and annealing
-
Surface coating and decoration requirements
-
Dimensional consistency across the assembled components
-
Inspection procedures for finished sets
The interaction between these factors is particularly important for unusual glass shapes and multi-component packaging. A small dimensional variation in one component may become much more visible when two decorated bottles are joined together.
This is why Design for Manufacturability (DFM) review should begin during the concept stage whenever possible. Evaluating production constraints early can help identify potential risks before they lead to repeated mold revisions, unnecessary costs, or delays to a product launch.
