Project Overview
-
Client: European independent fragrance brand (anonymized at the client's request)
-
Project: 50ml custom perfume bottle and spray pump system
-
Application: Premium niche fragrance
-
Packaging requirements: Bottle and pump component matching, including surface decoration
This project focused on evaluating the compatibility between a high-viscosity fragrance formula and its spray pump while preserving the bottle's original design and visual identity.

The Challenge: When a Fragrance Formula Causes Pump Return Delay
The client was developing a niche fragrance featuring natural resins and myrrh as key notes. The formula had a higher viscosity than a conventional fragrance, creating a challenge during initial testing.
The standard spray pump showed delayed return after pressing. This affected the consistency of the spraying experience, and some samples became difficult to operate after repeated presses.
For a premium independent fragrance brand, pump feel and reliable operation are important parts of the overall product experience.
The client's requirement was clear: retain the original bottle design while addressing the compatibility issue between the fragrance formula and the pump system.
Rather than changing the entire bottle design immediately, the project focused on evaluating the pump structure, spring performance, and the fit between the pump and decorated bottle neck.
Our Approach: Coordinating Pump Structure, Spring Force, and Bottle Compatibility
1. Evaluating Pump Chamber and Piston Compatibility
The pump chamber, piston movement, and internal flow path can affect how a spray pump performs with a particular liquid.
Working with the pump supplier, the project team evaluated the pump's internal structure against the measured viscosity of the fragrance. The aim was to improve liquid intake and support more consistent pump operation.
Instead of assuming that a standard pump would work with every fragrance formula, the project treated pump selection as a compatibility question requiring evaluation with the intended liquid.

2. Comparing Spring Force and Repeated-Press Performance
Spring force is one factor that can affect how quickly a pump returns after pressing. However, pump return performance also depends on the complete pump design, liquid properties, and internal resistance.
Three spring configurations were prepared for comparison using the client's fragrance formula. According to the project test records, each sample underwent 200 consecutive press cycles, with return time and spray output consistency evaluated.
The selected configuration was intended to balance return performance with comfortable pressing force.
The recorded results indicated that return time decreased from more than two seconds to less than 0.3 seconds under the reported test conditions.
This stage illustrates why pump compatibility should be evaluated using the intended fragrance and a defined testing procedure, rather than relying on component specifications alone.
3. Verifying Compatibility with Gradient Bottle Decoration
The 50ml bottle featured a gradient spray coating, transitioning from a transparent base to a deep amber tone near the shoulder.
Decoration and coating processes can affect the dimensions of specific bottle areas. For a pump assembly, the bottle neck and closure interface must be evaluated carefully to help achieve appropriate fit and sealing performance.
After selecting the pump configuration, the team remeasured the decorated bottle neck and reviewed the dimensional fit between the bottle and pump.
The objective was to avoid an assembly that was excessively tight while also reducing the risk of an insufficient fit that could compromise sealing.
This step highlights the importance of evaluating the decorated bottle and its matching components as a complete assembly.

Project Results
According to the supplied project data, the selected configuration achieved the following results:
-
Pump return time: Reduced from more than 2 seconds to less than 0.3 seconds under the reported test conditions.
-
Spray output consistency: Reported variation within ±5%.
-
Assembly yield: Reported at 99.2% for an initial 5,000-unit production run.
-
Development and delivery timeline: 28 days from solution confirmation to initial delivery.
These figures describe the reported results for this particular project. Actual performance may vary with fragrance composition, pump specifications, bottle dimensions, decoration processes, and test conditions.
“We initially thought we might need to change the entire bottle design to accommodate the new fragrance. Ejosson's team addressed the issue by focusing on the pump component, helping us solve the problem without compromising the design.”

What This Project Demonstrates
High-viscosity fragrance formulas can present challenges for standard spray pumps. A delayed return or inconsistent spray pattern should not automatically be attributed to the fragrance formula alone.
Potential contributing factors include:
-
Pump chamber and piston design
-
Spring force and return characteristics
-
Liquid viscosity and flow resistance
-
Pump and bottle-neck dimensional compatibility
-
Decoration processes and their effect on critical dimensions
-
The interaction between components during repeated operation
For fragrance brands developing a distinctive formula, evaluating the bottle and pump as one packaging system can help identify potential compatibility issues before full-scale production.
The appropriate solution depends on the specific formula, pump design, bottle interface, decoration requirements, and validation results. Testing should therefore be based on representative samples and agreed acceptance criteria.
